Relic Pieces: A Personal Journey

The power of creation

I’ve always been drawn to the idea of creating something from nothing, of transforming discarded materials into something beautiful and meaningful. That’s what drew me into making Relic pieces.

A new life for leftovers

When I first started working with polymer clay, I was often left with scraps and shards from my projects. Instead of throwing them away, I began to experiment with incorporating them into new designs.

The concept is simple yet meaningful to me: instead of discarding pieces of cured polymer clay from past projects, these fragments are given new life. Each shard carries with it the history of its origin – whether from an experimental slab that didn’t quite go as planned or from a finished piece that left behind a few small offcuts.

A tapestry of memories

The process of creating Relic pieces is akin to assembling a puzzle, where each shard finds its perfect place within a new whole. As I arrange the shards on a shaped base or inside a frame, I’m weaving together a tapestry of my artistic evolution.

The tactile experience of working with Relic pieces is unique. As I arrange the shards, I’m absorbed in the textures and colour variations. It’s like touching a piece of history.

Finishing touches

After the composition is set, the Relic piece is further refined. Wax, paint, resin and mica powders are applied to enhance the textures and bring out the details in the clay. These finishing touches add depth and character, transforming the piece into a wearable work of art. The variations in color and texture are not just byproducts of the process, they are integral to the charm and uniqueness of each Relic piece.

A meditative experience

For me, working on Relic pieces is a meditative experience. There’s something profoundly satisfying about giving new life to what might have been discarded. It’s a reminder that creativity is not a linear process but a cycle of continuous growth and transformation.

A personal connection

Relic pieces resonate with those who appreciate the story behind the jewellery they wear. Each Relic is one-of-a-kind. The colours and shapes of the shards vary, and even the way they absorb paint or reflective mica powders differs from piece to piece. This unpredictability adds to the allure of Relic pieces, making them both accessories and conversation starters.

Moreover, Relic pieces embody the principles of sustainability and mindful consumption. By repurposing polymer clay shards, these pieces reduce waste and promote a more eco-conscious approach to jewellery making. In a world where mass-produced items are the norm, Relic pieces stand out as symbols of thoughtful, slow crafting.

When I wear a Relic piece, I’m carrying a piece of myself. It’s a reminder of the journey I’ve taken as an artist, the lessons I’ve learned, and the memories I’ve made.
