Creativity, commitments and my chaotic mind

Lately, I’ve found myself in a whirlwind of thoughts.

As a creative, I’ve frequently found solace in the creative process – letting my imagination guide my hands through exciting journeys with colourful materials. But these days, my mind feels skittish and restless, a stark contrast to the calm I would usually find at my table.

Is this what creative burnout feels like?

Balancing life’s demands

As I navigate post-menopausal changes in body and mind(!), I’ve noticed the added strain on my already full plate. Balancing life’s complexities and responsibilities, including a full-time corporate job, jewellery making and all other aspects of running a small business, often leaves me feeling overwhelmed.

Rather than finding tactile joy in the experience of creating, I feel the weight of expectation: the need to produce, to accomplish, and to move on to the next task. This pressure pulls me away from the very act that once brought me peace.

In previous seasons of my life, the act of making jewellery was a meditative escape. I would sit down at my table, and the world around me would fade away. Each piece of polymer clay or glass, each gemstone and roll of wire was an extension of my thoughts, a way to still the noise in my head. But now, every time I approach my workspace, my mind races with to-do lists and obligations. I feel guilty for not “doing” more, for not being as productive as I think I should be.

Unpolished truth

I’ve come to realise that it’s important to acknowledge this struggle. There’s a tendency to want to present a polished version of ourselves, to wait until we have it all figured out before we share our experiences. But that’s not where I am right now. Naming this chaotic state of mind is crucial – it’s a way to validate my feelings and recognise that it’s okay not to have all the answers. It’s a reminder that creativity doesn’t always have to flow smoothly; sometimes, it’s a messy process filled with uncertainty.

Perhaps the solution isn’t to push harder but to allow myself the grace to simply be?

This journey isn’t just about finding a solution; it’s about recognising that the path is often winding and unpredictable. It’s about accepting that life is a series of seasons, each with its own challenges and gifts.

By sharing my thoughts, I am reminding myself (and you, if you feel similarly while reading this), that it’s perfectly normal to feel lost at times. Perhaps together we can find a slice of beauty and inspiration in the chaos. I have heard (and read), countless times that it’s in moments of vulnerability that we often find our most profound insights—and perhaps even the inspiration we’ve been seeking..

Final thoughts

My daily affirmation on creativity at the moment, is this:

In this season of my life, I accept my journey, with all its twists and turns.

I’m taking the time to recognise my feelings, allowing space for creativity to flourish in its own way, at its own pace.

So, here’s to the process, to the imperfections, and to finding joy in the act of creation – however that may look today.
